TLI-TXS: Transformational Strategies for Supply Chain and Logistics Management

This module will lead participants into developing correct perspectives and thinking skills needed to manage a supply chain, a skill critical in today's context of evolving supply chain models. The topics to be covered include evolution of supply chain thinking, components of a supply chain, principles, and value of good SCM, SCM operation and coordination, different practices of SCM, technology in SCM.

  • Half-day Executive Roundtable: Invited expert/s from the industry to share insights on some of the available technologies and solutions to solving complex supply chain problems.
  • Half-day virtual tour of a selected Centre of Excellence/ Supply Chain Innovation Centre to get to know the latest technologies

Course Objective

  1. Understanding the emerging trends and issues and its impact on Logistics and Supply Chain Management. Participants will be equipped with the knowledge to plan and lead their organisation’s supply chain function by adopting suitable technologies and strategies to ensure competitiveness of their business from the case studies and examples discussed in the course.
  2. Learn how logistics companies adopt and implement transformational strategies to enhance their competitiveness. The strategies can be adopted and implemented in their own companies’ environment.
  3. Develop correct perspectives and critical thinking skills needed to manage a supply chain competitively. The skills and techniques learned will enhance the decision-making process. This will enable participants to adopt the most suitable strategic decisions for their companies to innovate and enhance their business excellence and supply chain competitiveness.
  4. Learn the latest technologies from Centres of Excellence and/or Centres of Supply Chain Innovation. Participants will be able to witness cutting edge and practical innovation and SCM solutions in action.

Instructor's Profile

Dr. Robert de Souza is the Executive Director of The Logistics Institute - Asia Pacific (TLI-Asia Pacific) at the National University of Singapore.

Robert is a graduate of Loughborough University, a Chartered Engineer and a distinguished writer, speaker, consultant and advisor in the area of IT and supply chain management.

Prior to the current appointment, effective May 1st 2004, Dr de Souza served as Deputy Executive Director (Industry) and IT Director at TLI - Asia Pacific. Previously, Robert was Executive Vice President (Asia Pacific) for V3 Systems (a technology company). His extensive tenure in the industry also includes serving as the Corporate Senior Vice President and Global Chief Knowledge Officer at Viewlocity Inc. and co-founder, Vice Chairman and CEO of SC21 Pte, Ltd., a Singapore-based supply chain software firm.

He serves on many committees nationally, regionally and internationally and professionally is on the Editorial Boards of international journals. Most recently he has been active as an author, editor and series editor of many prestigious books and has over 100 publications to his name. He has been also awarded for distinguished service, best educator and outstanding services in education. He is an Adjunct Professor in the IsYE at Georgia Tech in Atlanta and also a Senior Fellow in the Dept of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the NUS.

In November 2014, Robert was conferred National Day Honours from the President of the Republic of Singapore in the form of the Public Administration Medal (Bronze).

Prof. Mark Goh is Director (Industry Research) of TLI-Asia Pacific and a Professor (Practice) at the Department of Analytics and Operation at NUS Business School.
A former Colombo Plan Scholar, he holds a Ph.D. from the University of Adelaide.

He sits on many committees, including Board Member of the Chartered Institute of Transport (Singapore), past Chairman of the Academic Board of Examiners for the Singapore Institute of Purchasing and Materials Management, member of the Advisory Committee of the Transportation Resource Centre (NUS) and a past Vice President of the Operations Research Society of Singapore, Associate Senior Fellow of the Institute of South east Asian Studies. His other professional affiliations include membership of INFORMS, and the Academy of International Business. His biography appears in Who's Who in Asia and the Pacific Nations, Who's Who in the World, and Outstanding People of the 20th Century. He was a member of the Global Advisory Council (GAC) on Logistics and Supply Chain with the World Economic Forum.

He has held appointments as a visiting Professor in Business Logistics Strategy at Chulalongkorn University, Commonwealth Fellow to the UK, Citibank International Fellow to the US, visiting research fellow at UMIST, visiting scholar at Beijing University, visiting professor at Melbourne University, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Sun Yat-Sen University, Kaohsiung, King Mongkut University of Technology Thonburi, and professor at the University of South Australia

A/Prof. Tan Kok Choon is Director (Education) of TLI-Asia Pacific and Deputy Director of the Department of Analytics and Operations (DAO) at NUS Business School.
A/Prof Tan received his BSc (1st Class Hons) in Mathematics from the National University of Singapore and his PhD in Operations Research from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was an NUS Overseas Post-Graduate Scholar at the Operations Research Center, MIT. He has held appointments as Assistant Professor and Departmental Manager in the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Science, NUS, as well as Manager (Operations Research) and Container Terminal Process Manager in PSA Corporation Limited, and Manager (Operations Research) in PSA International's Group Technical and Operations Development Department. He was also seconded to the Land Transport Authority as Operations Research Manager and had been Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, NUS.

A/Prof Tan teaches Business Analytics, Management Science, Inventory Systems, Industrial Logistics and Supply Chain Management in the Department of Decision Sciences at NUS Business School. His teaching philosophy is to use his industrial experience to enrich his students and to help them connect concepts learnt in class with practical solutions to problems in industry.

A/Prof Tan had been the Honorary President of the Operational Research Society of Singapore (ORSS) for three years from April 2003 to March 2006 and is currently an active member in the management committee of ORSS.
